INTRO
I picked Rituals because i love the idea of taking photos of your own personal rituals, and or changing your day to day life for images, it interesting the ideas photographers come up with. i like the way they take a photo of something each day but each time it has been changed.
ANDREAS GURSKY
Andreas Gursky is a German photographer who likes to change the perspective of photographs and how we see them from how they are taken, he dose this by taking loads of photos of the same location from different angels and perspectives and then using photoshop to combined them together, further more the changes the images colour of objects to make the photo look more attractive to the eye. "The perspective in many of Gursky’s photographs is drawn from an elevated vantage point. This position enables the viewer to encounter scenes, encompassing both centre and periphery, which are ordinarily beyond reach." (wikipedia). Gursky has been holding exhibitions ever since 1985 and has been ever since, he has shown his work around the world and in famous places like 'the museum of modern art', ' Tate modern' and 'Kunstmuseum Basel'.
I personally love his work because of the colours, my favourite images of his are in the slide show above from 'Cent 99', thurther more I love the idea of changing the perspective using photoshop to places you could never take a photograph. I think his work from 'cent 99' represents rituals as shopping is a everyday or weekly ritual that has to be done, having the people inside the photos is him showing other people do rituals. |

Andreas Gursky 'Rhein II' experiment
Gurskys most famous photo 'Rhein II' is mainly known as the most expensive photograph ever sold, His 2063 x 3575 x 50 mm frame and image 1564 x 3083 mm photograph sold at a auction price of 4.3 million. This huge image takes hours to perfect in photoshop as it is may look like an average image of a lake but is totally not what it looks like. this photographs consists of many portraight images of a river and then all connected together, smoothed out and buildings removed in photoshop, this takes hours upon hours to make it look as good as it dose.
Last lesson i thought i would have a go myself, i started of by going to the side of the school building and walking far out and zooming in until i get the bottom and the top and bottom of the building then i would take photos of the building and remembering where the edge of the photo was, i would keep going until i got to the end of the building. After that i took these images to photoshop.
RITUAL ASSESMENT : MARTIN PARR.
.This photograph by Martin Parr is of an English sea side town harbour in my opinion, however this is not the ordinary part of the harbour. In the photo we see a woman sun bathing and a young girl playing, we see a mysterious digger near where the girl is squatting. This image draws the eye as it is a extremely strange place to be relaxing, this may be because the woman wanted more privacy as the beach was to crowded. One thing that drew my eye was the man wearing a suit in the background on a hot day, what is his intentions ? Why is he here ? I believe that the man may be an important role of the construction of whatever is going on in the harbour due to the digger being there. The contrast between the small blue bucket and the spade is almost ironic due to the digger being a larger bucket and spade. As this photograph was taken between 1983-1986 i wonder what happened to the construction and if you went back and took this image in the exact same place and angle what would it look like now? I find it very interesting that mostly everything in this image is man made and how beaches are usually made by nature. The light in this image is very bright and i think Parr is playing on due to the position he is in, For example ; the sun is coming from the upper left of the image because of where the woman is sunbathing, due to this we get a side angle of the sun glimmering onto the woman and surrounding objects, therefore we a lot of shadows. We see Parr has possibly split the image into 2, one part of the image is in front of the small wall and the other part is behind the wall. In this we can almost see a mirroring between the 2 parts, for example; we can see a towel in both sides, structures in both sides and also people in each side. I think Parr has done this to show his 2 interests and contrast. I think Parr took this image to show the ritual of holidays and how weird they are if you think about them. Why do people decide to leave their humdrum lives to go somewhere else to take of their clothes and lie down in the baking sun? Martin Parr was clearly interested in this ritualistic behaviour. We might have several questions about this image. For example, why has this holidaymaker decided to sunbathe underneath the monstrous caterpillar tracks of an industrial machine? Looking at the image, the colours are very dull, however there are certain objects that absorb your attention, these include the small bright coloured bucket and spade and the little girls Florecent pink swimsuit. It seems like the mum has tried to make the 'holiday'. As a conclusion, Parr has used rituals as a theme to show the abnormal life of holiday goers.
GURKSY LANDSCAPE ATTEMPT 2.
I had another attempt at the gursky landscape photoshoot, I tried at another area of school with a wide landscape with buildings and trees, however my attempted did not work as I was taking the images to close together so the image canvas size was to close together
THE RITUALIST NATURE OF PUBS
As the world is celebrating the World Cup, English Pubs are filled with men and women chearing on their team as they watch the football on screen while drinking a pint. The nature of Pubs are very extraordinary and the history and how old they are is very interesting to me. As I have been in a few Pubs in my time due to my Dad you get to see a lot of stereotypes and lots of different people, for example;'the geezers', 'the rugby boys', 'the alcoholics' and many more weird and interesting people, I find this amazing as there is not just one type of people in a Pub. Im also amazed by how friendly and social Pubs are, you can walk into a pub and start talking to a guy who you have never met before. Now I believe the culture of British pub life is very ritualistic due to many reasons, for example; a lot of hard working men and women after their hard day at work will go to the pub, this is very ritualistic because it happens often. Another ritualistic reason would be the social life of it. a lot of family and friends including men meet up on special occasions at Pubs, this is ritualistic because it may happen more than once and is very sociable.
BAS JAN ADER
Bas jan ader was a dutch artist and film maker who was very interested in gravity and the sense of falling, Vader made installations and movies throughout his life such as I'm to sad to tell you, broken fall organic slow, fall 1, fall 2 and many others. Ader gained a lot of attention in the late 60s however gained most attention after his disappearance on July 9th 1975 where ader set out on a journey across the atlantic in a 13 foot boat named "ocean wave". Ader's boat was found abandoned on the coat of Ireland on august 18th 1975. Ever since there has been conspiracys of what happened to Ader but most presuming dead.
A subject that really interests me about Ader is that not the moment he is riding the bike being important nor is falling into the water, but its the part of him letting go and the part between (the ground and the water)

STEPHEN GILL.
Stephen gill is a British photographer born in 1971. Stephen gill was interested in photography from a young age, his dad being a keen photographer taught Gill how to process film and print from
A young age. Through his teenage years, Gill worked for a local photography conpany and experimented with ritualistic photography, portraiture and printing. After living in Bristol his whole life and changing from job to job Gill decided to move to london in 1994 and worked in the magnum photos agency and worked there until 2014 until opening his own studio.
Gill draws inspiration from his immediate surroundings of inner city life in East London and more recently Sweden with an attempt to make work that reflects, responds and describes the times we live in. Gill had a strong connection of the London environment and decided to create maby phtotos and albums on it, for example trolley portraights.

The concept of trolleys portraight started when gills friend told him to carry his equipment around in a trolley, Gill noticed that he was part of a ritualistic group of mainly older women carrying trolleys, Gill wanted to capture this to show the ritualistic nature of growing old. In this typology, Gill has concentrated on making the photos nearly similar so that the shuttle differences stand out. for example; all women are holding their trolleys, there all standing similarly the same distance away from the camera, the backgrounds of the images are all urban life and the fact that none of them are looking into the camera. this makes the viewer pay attention to all the differences thus for making the image stand out more as a whole.
IRVING PENN- CIGARETTES
Cigarettes by Irving Penn is a collection of photographs of cigarette butts taken in fine detail for that day and age. Penn used to pick up butts of cigarettes from outside her studio and then photograph it. This ritualistic habit of smoking is very interesting as most of the population dose it, the amount of cigarettes smokes varies but is all a ritual to every individual smoker.
DIPTYCHS AND TRIPTYCHS
Diptych and triptych come from the Greek meaning two (dip) or three (trip) fold (tych). This usually referred to a work of art that was divided into sections and hinged together but has come to be something that is widely used in photography and the art world
The words Diptych and triptych comes from the greek meaning 'dip' meaning two, 'trip' meaning three and 'tych' meaning fold. Diptychs come mainly from the medieval times where artists would paint 2 or 3 photos on a canvas with some sort of story or link behind each photo and then fold the art so the artist or the buyer could carry around the art and then place the art in a new location and place it on dinner tables or mantle pieces to show their guests their fortune as they was very expensive back then.
Now days, artists use diptychs and triptychs all the time to show relationships between photos, to tell stories and to show feelings.
MY TRIPTYCHS AND DIPTYCHS
“Your first 1,000 photographs are your worst.”
– Henri Cartier-Bresson
I picked this quote by Henri Cartier-Bresson because i think it closely relates taking photographs over and over again is a ritual. So by Bresson talking about taking 1000 photographs means that he is being ritualistic. I also like this quote because i also agree with the quote, you need to take many photos of the same thing or idea to pick your best one to present because if you take one photograph and leave it you may not like it. I will take this advise into my future projects.
YVES KLEIN, LEAP INTO THE VOID
In 1960, Klein published his own newspaper names the news paper of a single day. Its front page featuring a picture of Klein himself falling dramatically from a high wall, this photograph would sonly become one of the most famous photo for the new genre 'Performance art'. The photo astonished viewers as the photograph looks like a tragic injury, this made audience have many questions on what happened to him, it wasn't until Klein came out and told the world it was actually 2 separate images put into one, this made the audience even more amazed as image editing was not really a thing back then, he followed his explanation with the 2 images that he combined together..... From there, the game of photo editing changed.
I personally like this photo as it revolutionised photo editing forever and he made photoshop even before photoshop even existed,

MY APPROACH
I think my approach was different but shows a great relationship towards mine and Kleins, I personally think my photographs could have a better attempt and better lighting and backgrounds however I think it is a good attempt.
SOPHIE CALLE,THE HOTEL,1981
The hotel room 47, originally named L'Hôtel, Chambre 47 was taken by a French photographer names Sophie Calle. The piece consists of 7 photographs taken of objects and things in a Hotel room that Calle once stayed in, I personally like this image for a few reasons. One; the image if very ritualistic in its ways, it may not symbolise ritualism but the fact of taking photos of a placed you stayed and taking photos of objects that you use in your day to day life which is another ritual in itself. Two; the way that the images have been composed. For example: the big image has a relation to all the bottom images, the theme seems to be about un organise action and out of order, for example, one bed is made one is not, the shoes are not lined up straight, the papers are folded correctly, there is food and drink ontop of a book, the woman coat seems to be the only thing hung up ( what about the mans coat ?), the tea towels are hung on a sink? and a item of clothing is on the floor. This draws my eye as it brings a unusual feel to the photo and makes me want to fix the photograph in a way. I think it also shows a difference between 2 people as it seems to me like there are two people staying at this hotel.

PROJECT IDEAS
LONDON CULTURE
As a teenager living in southeast London, I think the London culture has changed a lot from when our parents was our age, in a day of technology over-ruling the world I like to pay attention to things that have not changed since our parents was kids. When talking to my parents about their teenage years I like to listen to what it was like for them growing up and how it has changed. In addition, I think London is a beautiful place for tourism, London has a very certain and different vibe to other countries.
In this project I want to dig deep into traditional London cultural vibes that makes London London.

GLOBAL MARKET
Global Market, a photobook, by the students from ECAL in Switzerland, includes the work of 15 photographers and is the result of a project with artist Lorenzo Vitturi in collaboration with Offprint at Tate Modern 2018. Each photographer was challenged to create a small portfolio of images of a particular public space in London. For example, there are pictures of street markets and arts spaces. The portfolios were all printed using a range of techniques including black and white inkjet and risographs. Visitors to Offprint could meet each artist, talk to them about their work and select one of more of their images. These could then be combined in a unique photobook with a choice of screen printed covers and an information insert.
LORENZO VITTURI, DALSON ANATOMY
Lorenzo Vitturi, a italian/london photographer created "Dalson anatomy" a series of of photographs in a A4 hardback book based on Dalson market. Vitturi, who lives locally feels compelled to capture its distinctive nature before it is gentrified beyond recognition. Vitturi arranges found objects and photographs them against backdrops of discarded market materials, in dynamic compositions. These are combined with street scenes and portraits of local characters to create a unique portrait of a soon to be extinct way of life. Vitturi also presented his work in an exhibition and in Dalton market itself. In Vitturi's exhibition, he created a iconic British market set and presenting this photos on the walls of the gallery and also combining them into the market set. Furthermore, Vitturi used an actual mobile market stall and created it into a mini exhibition which and be moved around and placed in different locations.
I Think Vitturi's work is inspiring and has made me thing of an amazing way to present my final outcome.

THE MARKET STALL
Inspired by the ECAL students work and Lorenzo vitturi, I thought It would be amazing to present my book and photos of "the market" in a market style way like vitturi did himself. Above is a 70.5inch by 22 inch wooden foldable table which I am going to decorate in a market style way and then present and sell my final work.
I have spoken with the schools art technician and we are going to make a addition to the foldable table, we are going to add a headboard to go above the table to give a more market vibe and also to present more pictures. we will be working on building this in out of school times and in out controlled assessment.

THE MARKET SHOOT ONE PHOTOS
SANDWICH BOARD/SHOP SIGN IMAGE CREATION.
In todays lesson, I used one of my two shop signs and placed a image of one of my market shoot one photos inside. I did this by splitting the original image into four sections (each being a quarter of the image) by using photoshop and then printed them out, then I glued the quarters onto a white mount bored that is cropped to the shop signs size.

FINAL OUTCOME
I am very pleased with my final outcome, I think it Shows great relation to my theme of rituals which is traditional London culture and day to day life. I decided to present it in a market stall to give the vibe
