DISCARDED ITEMS
Discarded items sometimes create hazardous pollution, as David Attenborough showed in Blue Planet, and they can sometimes be the source of creative ideas. Eian Kantorhas recorded discarded items in a series of photographs called ‘Found Sculptures’. In the project ‘Some cities and Mountains,’ Anthony Gerace produced photographs that record discarded items and aspects of neglect in the environment. Morgan Z Schultz created a short film with animation entitled ‘Discarded’ about the items people leave behind.

I chose Discarded items because I was fascinated by the idea of changing something that was unattractive to the eye, and making it look better by the power of editing and photographs. I was inspired by artists such as Anthony Gerace and Eian Kantor and how they make photos of discarded items look good.
QUESTIONS FOR MYSELF.
QUESTIONS FOR MYSELF.
- To what extent dose the camera have the power to change the way people see an object ?
- how much rubbish pollution is in my local area ?
- what can I do to change to make my world a better place through photography ?
DAVID ATTENBOROUGH BLUE PLANET
In a weeks episode of blue planet, David Attenborough and his crew show the affects of plastic in our seas ruining our wildlife. Attenborough talks about the dangers for the sea creatures and even our planet, "There would rarely be a dive where I wouldn't find some form of plastic from a thread of plastic fishing line, sweet wrappers or plastic bottles," said by one of the crew members on the filming of the show. They continue to say about how they have had to save animals attached and dying from plastic wrappers wrapped around their neck and how they have seen animals dead floating on the ocean top.
David Attenborough and his team wanted to show the nation what we are doing to our planet and make a stop to it, I personally think its a amazing documentary and shows the real dangers of littering.
PLASTIC IN OCEANS RESPONCE
In this session, I went out onto my school playground and took photos of plastic rubbish I could see, after that I picked up the piece of rubbish and brought it back to class where I took photos of the pice of rubbish in different angles and lighting in front of a white screen. I think the photos went ok but some of the photos are very un focused and I personally like the photos of the white plastic in front of the white screen. I think this shows a relation because we are both helping out the environment by picking up others rubbish that they have thrown.
EIAN KANTOR,512 DISCARDED CIGARETTE BOXES
Eian Kantors 512 discarded cigarette boxes was a collection made in 2017 of finished cigarette boxes he found discarded on the floor, Kantor decided to do this peice after he changed his focus from people to his NYC surroundings especially garbage. I like this piece because of the colours, the journeys the boxes may have had and how and where they have been left. It is also interesting because you will never know where these boxes may be and who had them, it gives them a sort of mystery which I enjoy.
KEVIN NEWMARK PROTOPLASM.
Kevin Newmark Protoplasm series is a set of photographs on plastic carrier bags he found in his home town. his idea of the series is to show the amazing decay of something so simple and how it may look like something interstellar. I personally think its an amazing art of work and how he gets something so unusefull and makes it new and original again.
"My practice resonates around the themes of space, time, anxiety and displacement. In photographing discarded plastic carrier bags found in the canals of East London, I looked to find some solace for the exiled soul of the plastic bag. After short, useful lives, discarded plastic bags enter into a perpetual state of retirement, their spent utility a metaphor for our own mortal anxiety, whereas the demise of plastic is a distant, uncertain prospect. The moment of disclosure (cognition) is delayed to induce a sense of disorientation allowing the viewer to disassociate themselves from the dogma of optical faith."
MY APPROACH
I decided to go into the darkroom with many circular discarded items I found around school and around the class room, this consisted of bottle caps, pen lids, tin cans and many more products not in use. I decided to pick circular because it shows relations to planets and the interstellar vibe I had from Newmarks protoplasm. I tried developing the photos differently each time, placing disks in different styles/ways each time to see the variety I had. I picked this as my favourite photo because I think it shows a good relation to Newmarks protoplasm series as it dose give a space vibe and it is very scuttle and small and simple.
"DISCARDED", MORGAN Z SCHULTZ
Discarded by Morgan Z Schultz Is an animation to show how Schultz sees the world if everyone left and everything was left behind. I personally think its an amazing way to look at discarded items.

SHREDDED GARRBAGE
I used trimmings from the gilateen which had a lot of bright colours, I then placed them in the photocopier and photocopied them many times on A3 paper (each Time changing the colour). after that I then randomly trimmed that A3 paper and then used a Lightbox to take photos to give it a 3D take as well.
After this, I decided to take the strips of paper and use them in the darkroom and experiment, I played wit the shapes of the different paper, sizes, I tried scrunching them up, flattening them, making patterns and many more techniques, I'm happy with the outcomes and I will continue this development by trying to include animations inspired by Morgan z shuts.
SOME CITIES AND MOUNTAINS
Some cities and mountains by Anthony gerace is a portfolio of photographs taken in the destert of the American landscape and the sleepy towns of Asia . the series follows Gerace as he travels around these desolate places and towns and he takes interesting photographs to show these discarded towns in their natural ways.
I enjoyed these photos for the natural vibe they have, I like how there is no special editing or effects ad just shows these towns how they are, most of the photographs seem to be full of colour even though their "dull" areas. This makes us, the viewer intreeged to see what else these photos hold and or what these towns hold.

DISCARDED IN VENICE
In responce to some cities and mountains, on my journey to Venice in the easter holidays, I decided to take photos of discarded items and things while staying in this beautiful city. I struggled with this s slight amount due to the fact that Venice is a very vibrant and populated city, I still tried to capture some items and objects that caught my eye and I think I have a few good outcomes.
THE POLLUTED WORLD
In this day and age, our world is getting more polluted by the second. Mass consumerism is leading to us essentially burying and filling our earth in rubbish. The effects of pollution are going to soon become irreversible and with our out-dated capitalist society being dependent on us buying and selling random plastic junk that will soon end up in landfill things don't seem as though there going to get better any time soon. I hope that through the power of photography I can bring awareness to the global issue of rubbish pollution and bring about change. Hopefully, by showing the beauty discarded objects can hold will encourage people to make use of the discarded items cluttering their local area.
I took inspiration from 'some cities and mountains' by Anthony gerace, as I liked how his photos are simple but effective as he emphasises the formal elements such as colour and pattern, paying careful attention to the composition to ensure aesthetic pleasure.

BARRY ROSENTHAL"FOUND IN NATURE"
Found in nature is a set of images taken by Barry Rosenthal is about rubbish that he collected daily and put them into a collage according to their product e.g, sweet rapers, glass, shoes... However all of the images are based upon the theme off addiction. this builds a whole new idea to the collages and gives them a more deeper meaning to them.
on the collage of the theme alcohol, this is said "Addiction is the theme. Alcohol the subject. Form follows function. The design of these small containers is intended to make concealment possible. To function on the job or to fool one's spouse into thinking you are clean. Minis, half pints, hip flasks made of plastic help the alcoholic pass. No one serves a half pint at social gatherings. Not intended for polite society, these bottles have only one purpose. They speak to the addict."
I personally love this quote as it gives a deeper and sad story to a collage. Rosenthal has done this on all of this images. He took them by laying them out on a black canvas and photographed them.

PHOTOSHOP CUT OUT
Inspired by Barry Rosenthal collages, I wanted to play around with my photographs from Venice but I knew I couldn't use objects and photographs so I decided to use photoshop and play with it.
10 HOUR EXAM PLAN
1. Use photographs from venice, spend 1st hour on photoshop experimenting with cutting out the images and seeing what ones work.
2. Start to plan and collage what cut out photos look well and start to place them into collages.
3. once decided, start to collage three different collages on photoshop with different themes or colours with each one.
4. once done, print out and blow image onto A3 card and lay them next to original images with cut out photo .
5. start to experiment on how to exhibit the images. (possibly porjector)
6. use small little book and start to experiment with images and how to lay them in book as a little side peice to exhibition
7. work on refineing exhibiton and book until end.
