ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHS
In this lesson, Sir told us to go outside and take some photographs that link to the word "abstraction". Here are my outcomes.
EBI: With most of the photos, you can tell that they are objects, my aim was to make the audience not know what they are looking at, therefore they would have had to think about what they are looking at.
WWW:
My favourite photo is 3rd row down 1st photo because out of the others you cant realy tell what it is, in addition the lighting differs throughout the photo.
PAUL STRAND
Paul Strand was a American photographer and filmmaker who helped photography become a art form in the 20th century. In his mid 20s he work with fellow photographers/film makers such as Edward Weston and Alfred Stieglitz to further and define the understanding of modern photography and abstraction. Strand was introduced to photography when he was ion high school, he went on a school trip to a gallery and then from then loved taking photos. From then Strand has been known for his famous photos he has taken through out the years using the inspiration of modernism and abstraction.
ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHS 1
In this lesson i decided to try out some stuff on photoshop. I was inspired by a year 11s art work, this is a example of what i would like to do as my final project. Firstly i went outside and took photos of tress then found a photo i took of my legs. I copied and pasted the picture and over lapped it onto the picture of the trees. After that, i went to layers and i changed the layer to "darkness" to over lap the picture of my leg with the trees. Then i added text and just over lapped all the pictures with some text.
Abstract photograms
WWW: The photo came out well and it is quite abstract. the skull in the photos makes the photo quite scary
EBI: I could have tryed less exposure
ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAMS NUMBER 2
After I made the first photograms i decided to cut them all up and make them into one big abstract photo, the middle photo is what the outcome was. Then i wanted to make that cutup into another photogram, so i went to the dark room and i did that, the other 2 photos was the outcome.
ABSTRACT PHOTOGRAPHERS
Aaron Siskind
Siskind was a abstract in 1930 to 1990 in harlem. Siskind used to take photos of random objects on the street but he tried to take it as the human eye would see it.
Siskind used to turn away the history ( aka WW2 ) and used to think about the future and using that in his work.
Siskind was one of the first photographers to use "straight" photography, this was recording the world as the lens "sees" it.
Uta Barth
Barth is a contempary photographer who lives in Los Angeles.
Barth focuses the camera on a empty background to create blurry photograph. This idea is obscuring the image in order to highlight the photographic.
This makes the audience wonder what the photo is and what it would be like if it was focused.
This is just me testing some photos in the dark room.
ABSTRACTION ASSESMENT
ERNTS HAAS: Haas was a Austrian photographer in the 1950s after he moved to america after the war. He was very well known for being one of the pioneers for colour photography. Ernts Haas was born in 1921 and was introduced to photography at a young age as his father and mother was into the arts and photography, he went to a private school and studied arts there but when the second world war happened his education got interrupted but the invasion of Austria by Germany. After his Fathers death in 1940 Haas decided to take photography as a career instead of a hobby so he started taking photographs.
Haas started to hold exhibitions in Vienna but soon got bored and decided to pursue a career in America. There, he would travel around all of america to take abstract photographs of life. After traveling to New mexico (1952-1953), Haas decided to try experimenting with colour photography, Following that Haas started getting mass attention from magazines and photographic companies like LIFE and MAGNUM.
From then until his death and after, Haas was well known for being one of the pioneers of colour photography and also well known for his interest in the water and sky.
My opinion on his photos ?
The reason i chose Ernts Haas is because i think his work is amazing, i personally love his pictures from America and the colours from the cars and there effect of it.
Here we have 2 of my favourite photos from Haas, the difference between these 2 photos is shown. In photo one we have a picture taken from a straight angle and photograph 2 is taken from a up angle like he is on a building. Further more the colour contrast between each photo shows the emotion of the picture, in photo 1 it is quite bright with all the different car colours and gives a nice warm atmosphere to the picture but picture 2 a much darker photo and showing connotations to sadness, the reflection from the rain gives a mournful vibe.
TESTING FOR FINAL ASSESMENT
For my final assessment i want to base my idea on radioactivity and hazmat, i got this idea from a photographer called michael abeles and a brand called calibrations.
DAFNA TALMOR
Talmor is a english photographer who was born in Israel and then moved to venezuela and then England, Talmor has always been inspired by photography from a young age due to moving to different countries a lot and having to leave things and memories behind, Dafna found that having a camera was a great way to keep memories with her forever. Dafna went to goldsmith university and took many photos and albums of self portraiture but found out with all these photos from her travels she can combined them and using negatives. Since then Dafna Talmor has gone onto holding many exhibitions and have many series of photographs.
TRYING OUT DAFNAS WORK
We was set a task to play around and experiment by using slides of film, we was given a bunch of random slides of film and then we just played around with them.
I wanted to do something simple but effective, i cut out random objects or people from different slides and then combined them into one big slide, i was mainly inspired by my favourite artist called Blondey Mcoy, this is some of his work.
As you can see, his work is very random and is very abstract. I like his work because it is very colourful, bright and abstract, i also love the objects (stickers) he uses on his work.
HOW I DID IT. I mainly just used a scalpel and or scissors and cut out the objects, after that i used sticky back plastic in the size of a film slide and stuck the tiny pieces of film to the sticky back plastic and then put it in a slide mount. WWW:
Im happy with they way they came out.
They are similar to Blondey Mcoys art work
The objects that i cut out are abstract.
EBI:
The objects that i cut out could have been more neater and not look like they have been cut out.
